A plugin for aditional support

I have added the "Linker button" to my blog. It allows you to discover more about some of the concepts that are used on my blog. In the screen shot you see information about publications for the concept "handwriting".

The terminology used is based on what can be found in Wikiprofessional.org. This contains a really rich resource for biomedical terminology. It includes information like publications and authors from Pubmed (for the security conscious among you, Pubmed is seen here through the "Conceptweblinker").

The cool thing for me is that Wikiprofessional in its wiki part is based on the OmegaWiki mark I technology. We are currently working hard on making the data mining engine mindful of new concepts that are entered in the Wiki. When we have this working, I can make sure that all the concepts in my blog are known to the engine and in this way my blog becomes easier to understand for those whose English is not as good as mine.

The current terminology is quite extended. From the Conceptweblinker and from Wikimore.org you can experience what can already be done for the English language Wikipedia. Given the terminology, it works best for those articles that are in the bio-medical domain.

A proud moment

I received an e-mail about my publication on Genome Biology. The message is that the article that I am one of the authors off is being well read. Some 13.919 people have read it from the Genome Biology website and it is now rated as "highly accessed" relative to age.  This number does not include any of the readers who came to the article through Pubmed Central or other archive sites.

This article is of interest to the Wiki world for several reasons; there are a few other authors to this article that have a certain reputation in this world but more importantly, I want you to have a look at the semantic support that is provided by Wikiprofessional to the English language Wikipedia. Consider for instance the article Malaria, when you look at it with the "Concept Web Linker" a wealth of information is provided to the article.

Currently only English is supported. Support for Spanish and Portuguese is being developed and, we would love to include more languages. We are making a shortlist of languages Chinese (Mandarin), French, German, Arabic are already on there ... for personal reasons I would love to see Farsi included..

Jimmy Wales as an author of a scientific paper

You may have read in Ars Technica about Jimmy Wales named in the author list of a scientific paper. The paper has now been published on Genome Biology. The paper is of interest and I recommend you reading Community annotations with WikiProteins.

The author of Ars Technica expressed his amazement of Jimmy being part of this paper. Jimmy has played an important role in the conception of Wikiprofessionals. Jimmy and Barend Mons met in Brazil at a conference and they discussed all kinds of everything but of particular relevance was that they discusssed what makes the difference in projects when you need the collaboration of many people.

Jimmy did a great convincing job selling the notion of Wikis. He told Barend to get into contact with me and as a consequence a fruitful collaboration started with several people heavily into wikis got involved. I want to mention Erik Moeller and Sabine Cretella here as well. The collaboration was a big boost to OmegaWiki and it resulted in the first Wikiprofessional.

It is a great practice to honour people who have been important in the developement of a new concept. Jimmy deserves to be mentioned in this way and I am glad that he is. In a way, all of us who are involved in wikis can be proud.
