Tatiana Carneiro is an entymologist. Her work is known at the Biodiversity Heritage Library. When you check the "authors page", there are two other identifiers known and, for "Tatiana R. Carneiro" the same two identifiers are shown as well.
When you google for Mrs Carneiro all kinds of information may be found but you do not want to do this for all the 177,271 BHL authors that are waiting in Mix'n'Match. It is no fun and only a few people take up a task like this.
So the question is; how do we make it more rewarding and how do we bring the many Brazilian papers to Wikidata as well. What is it that there is to achieve and how does it benefit all the people reading Wikimedia content.
For readers of our content, there is little merit in the fact that all these authors published papers. Many of them have been published with a DOI and, many of these papers are freely available to read. For them the papers are important. So contrary to a more normal database approach it is not the authors we should concentrate on but it is their publications. In addition to this, the BHL actively promotes the use of illustrations and publish them on Flickr. Thanks to the fine work of people like Fae these illustrations end up on Commons as well. It will be a challenge to link them to all this metadata..
There are millions of illustrations, there are far fewer publications and many authors are known for not one but multiple publications. To complicate it even further, an illustration has an illustrator and many publications are exclusively found in archives. Many publishers are no longer active and all this information is or may be considered relevant.
So what to do; first import all the publications that are freely readable. The publications with a DOI and include the author information as "author name string". When an author is known to Wikidata, we can always add the author information as well. The benefit of this approach? People can read now.
To make it interesting we can run a bot using the APIs of the BHL. We add missing books for authors and add the authors to the books where this information is missing. Running this regularly will make it interesting for anyone interested in the work of the BHL. But most importantly, people can read now.
Thanks,
GerardM

Judith Butler in #Brazil - a reaction in the #Wiki way
When the news has it that an effigy is burned of Mrs Judith Butler in Brazil, it is time to give some attention to Mrs Butler. There is information about her, papers she published and one way of adding to the relevance of Mr Butler is by increasing the people she is connected to.
In 2012 she was awarded the Lyssenko award. Adding that date and the other award winners works in two ways; Mrs Butler is better connected but the other award winners are better connected as well.
There is an article for Mrs Butler in English Wikipedia but given that it is a French think tank who conferred this award, chances are that not everyone on this list has an English article. There are projects that suggest articles to write.. Adding awards in this way may feed those projects. I hope so. For me that would be the best outcome that could be achieved.
Thanks,
GerardM

#Wikidata - Premio Almirante Álvaro Alberto
The Premio Almirante Álvaro Alberto is named after admiral Álvaro Alberto da Mota e Silva. They are both notable for their own reasons.
The award was mentioned in an article on the German Wikipedia for César Camacho. The award was not known to Wikidata and was added. The website of the conferring organisation gives me the impression that it is the "National Council for Scientific and Technological Development" and part of the Brazilian ministry of sciences. When you look for it in Wikidata, it is embarrassing.
The admiral is probably a child of his time. He was military and also a very relevant scientist. As a military man he held the rank of vice admiral and as a scientist he was twice the president of the academy of scientists. He was also very much involved in the Brazilian nuclear program.
When you consider the notability of Brazil, it is astounding how little is known in Wikidata. Many politicians have been added for Brazil; national senators and deputies.
Brazil is one of the top twenty countries in the world I think, when you consider any and all of the "lesser" countries it is obvious that we know even less. When Wikipedia and by inference Wikidata is about the sum of all knowledge, there is a lot of white space where all our tools have no impact.
Thanks,
GerardM

#Wikidata - Jurandyr Noronha died in 2015
Mr Noranha died on 2015-05-10. Mr Noranha was active in the movie industry so he is known in the IMDB database.
People die all the time but with the list functionality Jura1 created a page for "Brazilian people who died in 2015" dead Brazilians have an added significance. Mr Noranha qualifies..
At issue is that while Mr Noranha is known to Wikidata, it still takes a person to make a manual statement about his final day. I have done that for a year but I find that I am falling more and more behind. I do not even make a statement for Mr Noranha to be a Brazilian.
One thing that is not motivating is that I KNOW that this information is there for Wikidata to be had. The wonderful people at DBpedia really want to share this with Wikidata. Not much happens and as it ism my enthusiasm is wavering and my precious free time that is in demand for other things as well..
So what to do..
Thanks.

#Diversity - Therezinha Zerbini, a lawyer from #Brazil II
The Spanish article about Mrs Zerbini has it that she won the prestigious Bertha Lutz award. According to the Portuguese article about the award, there are 74 women who have been celebrated in this way but not Mrs Zerbini.
Because of the extra attention given to women this month, I have added all these women to Wikidata. They are now all known as award winners, they are all women and, I added the date when the award was given.
There were three issues; some articles did not have a Wikidata item. Some were not known to be human and finally some articles did not exist. At this moment these issues have been solved for Wikidata and, I even added Dutch labels for good measure.
What still needs to be done is adding labels in Portuguese and write articles in any language. Finally I would appreciate it if someone could establish if Mrs Zerbini did win the award or not.
Thanks,
GerardM

#Diversity - Therezinha Zerbini, a lawyer from #Brazil
Therzinha Zerbini died. She is the kind of woman that deserves to be better known. There is no article yet in English but from what I understand using Google translate, it is people like her that shaped history.
She is a founder of the Movimento Feminino pela Anistia. It does not even have a Wikipedia article in Portuguese..
This organisation was vocal about the existence of imprisonment, torture and political persecution. At the time when these things happened. As such it was timely, relevant and in the end it won the day.
Mrs Zerbini is the kind of woman we should know more about.
Thanks,
Gerard

#Wikidata - Does Mr Ulibarri live and when he does, then what ?
According to the #Portuguese #Wikipedia, Mr Ulibarri died. The date of his demise was given as June 1 2014. It was marked in a category of people who died, then it was picked up by tools and consequently Mr Ulibarri was marked as dead in Wikidata.
According to some, unsourced facts should not be in Wikidata and a Wikipedia is not a source. It is part of a blame game; I was accused of entering wrong information.
I prefer to live by the motto that I am proud of the mistakes I make; they prove that I am productive. Realistically, Wikidata has hardly any sources when you remove all the Wikipedias from the equation. Errors will be included all the time by me and by countless others. There is no helping that.
For those Wikipedias who expect sources for all statements; tough. It won't happen any time soon. The best that can be expected is that comparisons are made. Differences will be found in that way and they can be fixed where needed. In the case of Mr Ulibarri it is suggested that it is a case of mistaken identities. A Mr Marinho Chagas died, he was also a soccer star. Mr Ulibarri's full name however is Mario Peres Ulibarri, he is also known as Marinho Peres.
An unanimous user edited the Portuguese Wikipedia and made Mr Ulibarri live again. It was commented that there are no sources for his demise. I am happy for Mr Ulibarri that it turned out all right for him.
Thanks,
GerardM

#Wikidata - Rejoicing for new rollback functionality
When Wikidata is to be relevant as a source for info-boxes, it has to include substantially more information. For humans it starts with really basic information.. human, gender, date of birth/death, nationality, spouse, child, occupation, office held.
It may sound odd, but once you have data, you can manipulate it. Without data you are stuck. Take for instance the Olympics, originally all the athletes were amateurs and the current practice is to make all of them professionals at their game.
You can imagine that to get much LOTS of data in, things go wrong occasionally. Consider for instance the directory "Brazilian people by occupation" or "American politicians" with a name like that you expect all the humans mentioned in those categories to be Brazilians or politicians.. They are not.
I am really happy that Autolist2 allows for rollback; it took care of expatriate footballers in Brazil. I am really happy with friends like Amir he took care of the problem with all those card carrying Americans. He even promised to make it a pywikibot program once he finished his exams.
Those expatriate footballers live or lived as residents in Brazil, those Americans may be Republican or Democrat. That is another opportunity for data inclusion. However, when you enter data wholesale, chances for lots of problematic edits are a reality. Statistically maybe not that much but enough for them to be noticed and, that is a good thing.
Rollback functionality is essential to maintain the quality we all seek. It allows us to make mistakes and make amends.
Thanks,
GerardM

#Wikidata - Brazilians who died in 2014 II
Currently Wikidata knows about 30,123 Brazilians, more than 10% that are "known" on the Portuguese Wikipedia. Thanks to this effort, the Wikidata number of dead Brazilians at this time is 57.
It is obvious that more notable Brazilians died in 2014. Sadly, Wikipedia does not know about them or maybe it does and Wikidata does not know that a Wikipedia does.
Relevant is that Wikidata knows about more Brazilians than any Wikipedia.

GerardM

#Wikidata - Brazilians who died in 2014
How many people from Brazil died in 2014 according to Wikidata. The answer is obvious when you know that a human is a Brazilian. So when he dies, ie a date of death is available, it is just a matter of applying the right query and you get an answer.
Surely there are more than 41 notable Brazilians who died in 2014. It means that we need to know for more humans that they are Brazilian. The category Naturais do Brasil knows about some 26,520 Brazilians, 1,128 are not known to Wikidata and 14,393 are known to be human. Of these humans 7,481 are known to be Brazilians and consequently we can safely add a statement of a Brazilian nationality to 6,912 humans.
This process is under way and the number of deaths is on the rise. Not as much as you would expect because nationality is often added when someone is registered as dead.
What is left are 1,128 articles that need an item and 12,127 items that need to become both human and Brazilian.
Thanks,
GerardM

#Wikidata - #soccer players from #Brazil
Soccer is probably the most popular game in the world. Many of the best players are from Brazil. The English Wikipedia has a category for them and it includes 4907 pages. Of these pages, 4718 have a Wikidata item.
At the start there were some 527 Brazilian soccer players known to Wikidata. Using this category all the items were made a "human" a "Brazilian" and a "football player". The result is that Wikidata now knows about 4727 "Brazilian soccer players".
Obviously, when the missing items are added, there will be a few hundred more people known to be Brazilian soccer players. When the same process is executed on the category for Brazilian soccer players even more people are likely to be known as such.
Obviously this same process could be done for soccer players from Britain, Russian, the Netherlands, France, Cameroon...
There is enough left to do so join in the fun.
Thanks,
GerardM

Gender distinction for the #Portuguese language
Making a difference
based on gender is not the #Wikipedia thing. In selected situations
it is however a #MediaWiki thing. Gender and particularly linguistic
gender distinguishes how a man or a woman is addressed or referred
to. For several languages the “User” name space will be named
differently depending on the gender set in the user preferences.
When our messages support gender, it becomes possible to address people using natural language. This improves readability and consequently it makes MediaWiki a more friendly environment.
For the Portuguese language this has
been implemented recently. Changing a name space is different from
programmatic changes; it requires someone who can configure the
servers. This means that Portuguese did support gender before it is
just that one of the more visual aspects of the user interface
supports gender.
Supporting gender is an
iterative process. Many MediaWiki messages pre-date gender support
and at translatewiki.net we get a steady stream of requests to
support gender in specific messages on our “Support” page. With
so many Portuguese speaking ladies becoming aware of our gender
support, they must find occasions where messages could address them
even better.
We welcome any lady
from any language (as well as any gentlemen) to help us improve the
MediaWiki experience and point out more messages that can do with a bit of genderification.
Thanks,
GerardM

Where and why to have an office; #India and #Brazil
There has been a lot of news in the press about the #Wikimedia Foundation opening an office in India. This is a result of considerations in the strategy project. Both India and Brazil have been selected for having a WMF office.
The news that a location is to be selected has generated a lot of media attention in India. Several Wikimedians have come and gone to meet the Indian community and when some 600 people come to welcome Jimmy, the Indian community is clearly alive and well.
By contrast not much is happening in Brazil. For reasons not clear to me, there is a group of active Wikimedians who are not interested in starting up a chapter. As Brazil is recognised as strategic and as the Brazilians themselves are not organising themselves, an office can be the proxy needed to realise the ambitions for Brazil.
The reason for an office in Brazil seems obvious. It is less clear what the added value will be in India. it will be interesting to see how things develop.
Thanks,
GerardM

#Brazil is not #strategic (yet)
According to the #Wikimedia Foundation, improving its presence and popularity in Brazil is a strategic goal. It shares this status with India and this is exactly what it has in common with India.

What I do know about Wikimedia in Brazil is that they do not have a chapter even though there has been much activity. As there is not much positive to say, there is not much to blog about.
What the Wikimedia Foundation can do is support what is there. Having a visible and organised presence in the form of a chapter is a start. A start that is not happening.
Thanks,
GerardM
- India is actively organising its chapter
- multiple Wikipedias exist for multiple Indian languages
- the Indian communities organise many events like workshops..
- there is much positive news in the Indian press about Wikimedia
